Haunted or Not Haunted?

Tuesday, March 1st, 2011

You might be surprised how often callers to our Wilmington NC bed and breakfast, after they’ve asked about our location in the historic district, room sizes, private baths, fireplaces, and what we serve for breakfast, want to know whether or not our historic inn is haunted! We have standard answers for most of these standard questions but initially we didn’t really know how to address the ghost issue.

For starters, the Wilmington Ghost Tour wanders several different routes snaking through downtown and the Camellia Cottage is not featured on any of them, although one of the houses across the street and the ancient cemetery down the block are often highlighted stops.

Innkeeper No.1 (Paula) swears up and down that someone regularly lifts the washing machine lid after she has started the wash cycle, shutting down her laundry efforts until she returns. Innkeeper No.2 (Steven), who has never seen, felt or met an ethereal being, is pretty sure that No.1 is just experiencing more and more “senior moments,’ rather than strange, supernatural encounters. Innkeeper No.3 (Sparky, the Wonder Dog) sometimes twitches while napping as if he is possessed but he’s just dreaming about the cute chihuahua in heat on the next block.

We have also hosted at least a couple guests who have reported unexpected, unexplainable interactions with the spirit world while enjoying the friendly but worldly luxury at Camellia Cottage.

So…our standard answer to the “Are you haunted?” question is now—“do you want us to be?!?”
