Have You Read a Good Guest Lately?

Wednesday, May 25th, 2011

Why do people choose to stay at a bed and breakfast? There are probably as many answers as there are B&B guests.

A cozy setting. Innkeepers with intimate knowledge of local restaurants, attractions and venues. A grand old Victorian house. Peace and quiet. Escape from home and family.  Alone time without the kids. Being near the relatives but not spending 24 hours a day with them. Share a meal with people you don’t even know yet. Let someone else make you a breakfast you would never make for yourself.  Getting away without really getting away. A pleasant interlude in the middle of a long, arduous journey. One-on-one with the one you love. Escape to where no one knows your name. Return to a place of fond memories. Make some new memories. Get back in touch with your mate. Get back in touch with yourself. Study for your certification exam with no distractions. You’re sooo tired of those sterile hotel rooms. Slow down the pace of your life for just a little while. Romantic getaway with a new friend.  Experience history.  Appreciate architecture.

Job One for veteran innkeepers is to greet you, meet you, listen to you, figure out what you need the most and then make sure you get it. Everything else flows from that. We call it “reading our guests.” Visit us at the Camellia Cottage Bed and Breakfast in wonderful Wilmington, NC for your own personalized  reading.

Frozen Fetishes on Front Street

Friday, May 13th, 2011

You are cruising the streets of historic downtown Wilmington and, all of a sudden, the urge hits you. It doesn’t just hit you. It grabs you by the scruff of the neck and drags you along until you satisfy the beast within. It’s a yearning deep inside that cannot be ignored, delayed or imagined away. It’s the core of your being announcing to your brain that you just gotta have it.

What is it that is driving you to distraction?

Is it your loved one? Nope.

Is it the pretty twenty-something across the street? You’ll never admit that one.

Is it an ice cold beer? Nice but nah.

Can it be dreams of breakfast at Camellia Cottage Bed and Breakfast tomorrow morning? Maybe, but that will have to wait.

None of the above.

What is it that you absolutely, no-doubt-about-it must have right this minute? It’s ice cream…or frozen yogurt…or Italian ices…or some other equally delicious frozen concoction that anaesthetizes your tongue while shooting frigid dollops of delight into the headwaters of your gastrointestinal system. And now you have several brand new options for satisfying your cravings while in the Port City.

Front Street is now the home of Rita’s Italian Ices. Over 30  flavors of Italian Ice as well as Misto shakes, creamy frozen custard, tempting gelatis, Blendinis and delicious Slenderita fat-free soft serve. Three blocks to the north is the Fuzzy Peach, specializing in Frozen Yogurt and an amazing array of toppings. With less calories than ice cream and almost no fat, this is a rationalizer’s delight.

Add this to the ice cream at Kilwin’s and Bela’s and we now have an embarrassment of frozen desert riches just a short distance from the Camellia Cottage. If you walk fast, you may be able to enjoy most of that frigid delight on the front porch!
