Moving to Wilmington NC – What to Expect When You Get Here

Tuesday, June 21st, 2011

Many of our guests at the Camellia Cottage Bed and Breakfast are here to scope out the Wilmington area as a possible place to live, or final resting place as the case may be. We thought we’d help by sharing our thoughts on what it will be like to actually live here.

  • More golf courses than you can shake a three wood at
  • Canoeing and kayaking among ancient bald cypresses and not-so-ancient alligators
  • Varied hiking opportunities among Venus fly traps, Spanish Moss and retired Yankees
  • The dog-friendliest downtown you’ll ever sniff
  • Really friendly people from all over NC, the south, the north and the world
  • The liveliest local theatre scene imaginable in a city of only 100,000 people
  • Some of the most arcane state liquor laws in the country
  • Only one snowfall a year (on average) that always disappears by the next day
  • Several 100 degree days a year and absolutely no negative degree days
  • Yes, we have beaches–at Oak Island, Fort Fisher, Kure, Carolina Beach, Wrightsville and Topsail Island.
  • A reasonable variety of good ethnic food (but it pales in comparison to that available in New York, Atlanta or D.C.)
  • Great NC barbecue—here it’s a noun, not a verb.
  • The benefits of having an 11,000 student university nearby—sports, music, lectures etc.
  • Strolling the Riverwalk makes you feel like you’re on vacation every day of the year

Summer Salutations

Saturday, June 11th, 2011

What brings to mind the perfect summer vacation – even if it’s just a weekend or day getaway?

Sunrise walk at the beach followed by a picnic lunch

Throwing your dog’s ball in the surf over and over and over and over…

Sunburn on your nose and sand in your toes

A sudden shower that cools you all down

Nap in the hammock on the Camellia Cottage porch

Iced tea or a glass of chilled white wine while rocking on the porch

Stopping at Farmer’s Market and eating a fresh peach or tomato with the juices running down your chin

Shagging outside with your beloved on a beautiful summer evening

Maybe another nap

Outdoor movies

Catching fireflies

Having someone else take care of meals and laundry so you can have…yes, another nap
