Fido’s Excellent Vacation

Wednesday, June 18th, 2014

I have been watching my people pack the car for a trip. Usually, they just pack their suitcases and cooler, but this time they are putting my bed and my food and my leash and bags in, too! Oh boy, oh boy, my people are taking me to Camellia Cottage Bed and Breakfast in Wilmington for a getaway. I have never stayed at an inn before and I have so many questions. Can I sleep inside their room? Will there be others of my species there? Will there be other species there? Can I go downtown with them? Can I play on the beach? Where is the best place to sniff? And, most importantly, where will I pee?

Now we are pulling up to the inn. The Dutch doors open in tandem as we are warmly greeted with a wag of the tail by our host and Camellia Cottage Director of Guest Relations, Sparky. When asked what breed of canine he attributes to himself, he lets us know that he is of the Burmese Wart Hound Clan, a proud organization that dates back over a gazillion years.

Sparky welcomes all two- and four-legged mammals to his bed and breakfast. Quadrupeds are treated to his Best of Wilmington recommendations, including Best Tree to Pee, Best Walk with Humans, Best Walk without Humans, Best Canine Community Bulletin Pole and Best Poop Bag Dispenser.

He shows the bipeds where to park, where breakfast is served and suggests various Wilmington activities and restaurants before guiding them to their rooms. He also advises humans where to put the poop bags, restaurants where they can dine without leaving me behind and bars where humans and canines can imbibe together.

Sparky makes sure that each of his new friends gets a home-made doggie biscuit. He consulted with the Camellia Cottage Pastry Chef on these biscuits so they would be great to eat and easy to make. Here is his recipe. I’m sure I’m going to have a wonderful time here, as will my people.

Camellia Cottage Homemade Dog Biscuits

2.5 cups whole wheat flour

½ cup milk or broth

5 tablespoons peanut butter or bacon drippings

Seasonings of your choice

¼ cup cold water

Stir together. Roll out to ¼ inch thickness and cut with cookie cutters into desired shapes. Bake at 350 about 20 minutes. Turn off oven, but leave biscuits in until oven cools down. This helps them get nice and crunchy.

We hope you will come visit Sparky (and Paula and Steve) again in wonderful Wilmington. All you bipeds can check out what’s going on in Wilmington before or after you make your reservations at the Calendar of Events page on the Camellia Cottage web site at

Camellia Cottage Bed and Breakfast, in the heart of Wilmington’s downtown Historic District, announced today that their inn is the only one in the area to be awarded both the 2014 TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence and the 2014 Fido’s Favorite Award from .

“This means that travelers from around the world have rated their B&B experience here very high on the world’s largest travel web site and pet owners traveling with their four-legged loved ones feel the same way,” said Paula Tirrito, owner and innkeeper.

“We are truly appreciative of these two awards. Whether you are traveling with a pet or without, these awards demonstrate that you will have a special experience at Camellia Cottage,” added Steve Skavroneck, the other owner and innkeeper.

The TripAdvisor® Certificate of Excellence award honors hospitality excellence and is given only to establishments that consistently achieve outstanding traveler reviews on TripAdvisor, the world’s largest travel web site. Camellia Cottage B&B has received this award 3 years in a row.
