$5 Burger Week in Wilmington

Saturday, May 16th, 2015

Over the years we have written several blogs on the relative virtues of various Wilmington area hamburgers and hamburger establishments. You might say we have a patty fixation and to this day we continue our quest for the perfect burger. Five local restaurants ┬áhave banded together to aid us in our cause. May 13 – 20 is $5 Burger week around here when each participating restaurant offers up its signature burger for only $5.

The Ogden Tap Room has an 8 oz. freshly ground and hand-pattied (pattied? Is that a word?) Mushroom & Swiss Burger on a soft Kaiser Roll.

Pine Valley Market features a 1/3-pound Certified Angus beef (certified that it’s Angus, certified that it’s beef or both?) cooked to desired temperature with choice of lettuce, tomato, onion and American cheese.

King Neptune is offering The Devil Went Down to Georgia Burger: a half-pound of free-range (we want the free-range part certified, too) certified angus beef topped with habanero devil sauce, fresh Georgia Peaches and Pepper Jack Cheese.

Dig & Dive’s entry is the Campfire Burger: a 7-ounce choice (is choice better than certified) beef double cheeseburger on a potato roll with housemade D&D sauce, smoked applewood bacon and roasted Roma tomatoes.

Finally, Sweet n Savory Pub enters the fray with their Pub Burger which comes with braised candied-bacon, lettuce, tomato and onion on a homemade (is this better than housemade?) roll, topped with special “Pub” sauce.

If you happen to try any of these this week, stop by the Camellia Cottage Bed and Breakfast and let us know what you think so we can report back to our guests and readers.

Mondo Bizarro

You have to check out the brand spankin’ new Museum of the Bizarre in downtown Wilmington, right next to the Cape Fear Serpentarium. Just opened this week. Judging by the sign on the front door, there are many gasps, scares and maybe even laughs to be had here. Here’s what’s on the door, presumably just a mere taste of what lies beyond…

  • Crystal Skull of Knowledge
  • Fort Fisher Mermaid
  • Alexander Hamilton’s Hair
  • Goat Brothers’ Heads
  • Bigfoot Imprint
  • Joe Baldwin’s Signal Lantern (Maco Lights)
  • Possessed Clown
  • Houdini’s Ouija Board
  • Ghost Deer
  • Crowley’s Doorbell
  • Numerous Movie Props
  • Wet Specimen Exhibits
  • Chupacabra Hand
  • Unicorn Horn

I could not make this stuff up. And, I’m a little concerned about the wet specimens. However, if you go in with the right attitude, this could be a barrel of fun (which just might be on display there.)
